Introduction:
In Ayurveda Rasyana therapy is traditionally followed for disease prevention, maintaining health, and promoting rejuvenation, longevity, and overall wellbeing. Long before the modern use of multivitamins, health supplements and immunity-boosting products, Ayurvedic Rasayanas were widely relied upon to support physical strength, mental clarity, and resistance to illness. These herbal formulations were prescribed not only to address weakness but also to nourish the body at a deeper level, supporting vitality throughout all stages of life.
Even today, some Rasayanas such as Chyawanprash remain well recognised and are commercially available. However, Ayurveda also describes several simple yet powerful homemade Rasayana preparations that can be easily made, stored, and used regularly, offering remarkable health benefits. One such traditional formulation is Kushmanda Rasayanam, also known as Kushmanda Lehyam or Ash Gourd Jam. Prepared using ash gourd (Benincasa hispida) along with natural sweeteners and rejuvenating herbs, this classical tonic is highly valued for its ability to combat general weakness, enhance stamina, strengthen immunity, and support both physical and mental wellbeing. In this article, we explore the significance of Kushmanda Rasayanam and share a simple and practical method to prepare it at home for those living in the UK.

Ingredients for Ash Gourd (Kushmanda) Rasayanam
- Ash Gourd (Kushmanda), grated or chopped – 3 cups (500 g)
- Ghee (Clarified Butter) – 3/4 cup (180 ml)
- Sugar / Jaggery – 3 cups (500g, adjust to taste)
Additives:
- Cardamom (powdered) – 1 tsp
- Cinnamon (powdered) – 1 tsp
- Dry Ginger Powder – 2 tsp
- Long Pepper ( powdered substitute with pepper) – 2 tsp
- Nutmeg (Jaiphal, powdered) – pinch
You can also add small amounts of corriander powder, clove, bay leaves or spices for additional flavor and benefits.
Procedure to Prepare Kushmanda Rasayanam
- Prepare the Ash Gourd: Peel and grate or cut into small pieces fresh Ash Gourd. In the UK, it is available at most Asian or Indian grocery stores.
- Melt the Ghee: In a heavy-bottomed pan, melt pure ghee over low to medium heat.
- Cook the Ash Gourd: Add the grated Ash Gourd to the ghee and cook on low-medium heat, stirring frequently, until it softens and most of its water evaporates.
- Add Sugar: Stir in sugar powder. Sugar is traditionally added to balance the formulation, but you can use less sugar or substitute jaggery/honey after cooling if preferred.
- Add Spices: Mix in additives powdered spices cardamom, dry ginger, nutmeg, and long pepper — to enhance digestion, flavour, and therapeutic effect.
- Cook to Lehyam Consistency: Continue cooking on low heat, stirring constantly. According to Ayurveda, lehyam is ready when it thickens enough to be sticky and cohesive, and forms a fine thread when lifted between the fingers also easily leaving the sides of the pan. This ensures proper consistency and retention of therapeutic properties
- Cool and Store: Remove from heat and allow to cool completely. Transfer to a sterilised, airtight glass jar and refrigerate. When prepared with sufficient sugar and ghee, it can keep well for several weeks. But always check for any changes in taste, smell or colour.
Notes: Adding sugar or jaggery traditionally helps with preservation and longer shelf life, but the amount can be adjusted according to dietary needs.
